The use of specific wavelength LED lights can significantly increase crop production

 

In the era of rapid population growth, the food supply has also become a matter that affects the interests of all people. Researchers predict that by 2050 the Earth's population will increase by another 2 billion people, yet the cultivated area will hardly change much. In view of this, scientists can only find ways to increase food production per unit area. For decades, researchers such as Yuan Longping have been fighting the front line of improving the yield of hybrid rice.

Recently, a team of scientists at the University of Sydney, the University of Queensland and the John Cannes Center published a study in the journal Nature Plants that claimed to be inspired by NASA to develop a study that borrows from the "space age" New Technique of Quick Breeding and Increasing Wheat Yield.

Building on a space food production pilot NASA conducted more than a decade ago, the technology relies on intense lighting to improve crop growth and health. In view of the better crops in the greenhouse on earth, scientists think of using low-cost, LED lights at specific wavelengths to promote crop photosynthesis.

With well-designed lighting, the research team was able to breed six seasons of wheat, chickpea, barley and four generations of rapeseed crops over a year. In contrast, the average greenhouse can only grow 2 to 3 seasons of crops per year.

It is reported that this technology also applies to peanuts, amaranth, lentils and other crops, sunflower, pepper and radish are also promising. Hickey said: "Currently, we use high-pressure sodium vapor lamps in greenhouses, which are quite expensive in terms of electricity demand."

In the paper, they demonstrated that wheat and barley can grow at a density of 900 plants / m², incorporating an LED lighting system. This is an exciting opportunity that is expected to be extended to large-scale industrialized cultivation.

Hickey also pointed out that this rapid breeding technology can not only increase farmers' output, but also improve crop quality. The team compared the characteristics of the plants with significantly higher tiller number and yield per panicle compared to conventional greenhouse-grown crops.

Dr. Wulff pointed out that despite the fact that grain production has been done so quickly, the yield and health of the crop has always been a "fish-and-bear" puzzle. However, compared with standard conditions, this new technology has been able to do both.
